Art Trades: A Cautionary Tale

Yeah. That's the actual title. I'll give you a minute to figure it out, based on the picture. Figure it out? Well, the lesson is, if you aren't specific about what you want, you may end up with something silly and unexpected. However, that might actually be preferable. I didn't actually plan to draw this picture as shown, it just sort of happened. Nid is Nid's Nidoran, Vapek might be hers, or he might belong to another, but it's all good (I suppose like Blade Knight inc. and others weren't technically created by me). Nid is also a pretty long running Nido character. Not the longest running, of course, ahem.

Flipside Skyline Color Version

Here's a color version of Flipside Skyline!

Flipside Skyline

I went through the trouble of coloring it, but I kind of knew I wanted it monochrome from the very beginning.  At any rate, it was supposed to look like a single tone print in a very early newspaper or magazine, hence, again, my decision to go monochrome (though actually you get two colors). Anyway, It's interesting to think how much Alternate Nidorina has come into her own and grew to become her own entity, but even then, you can take Nidorina out of Nidorina, but you can't take the Nidorina out of Nidorina. Or something like that. As opposed to doing a more cliched "twinsies" picture, I decided to do something more fun, all while making a point. Even though AU Nidorina doesn't have any of her own children, she still loves interacting with them (or the good ones, as she puts it). They both like to get dressed for occasions, and sometimes for no real reason at all. And despite growing up in the woods like her predecessor, Dimensional Variant Nidorina is very much a city girl at heart. Tales Nidorina isn't so much a city woman as she is someone who just finds it such an amazing place to be with so much to do and so much to see, and enjoys visiting whenever she can. She's just less bored in the sticks.

Here's a "lights on" variant without a background. As you can see, Lisa's favorite colors are purple and yellow

Even though the minimum amount of sleep differs by age, at least seven hours is recommended. Additionally, try to keep a regular sleep schedule. You'll be much healthier for it.

December 31th (Option B) - Nidorina Schneider

Option B: What you get is a Nidorina who's a little closer to common appearance, but acts primarily like a human with furry reminders (that is, moments where you're reminded she's still some sort of non-human creature) here and there. If there was an Option C, it'd be Lisa, who looks like a common Nidorina by and large, but has no monster left in her. Interesting how backwards it turned out. That's just the way it is.

It's likely for the best this one turned out the way she did, because at the very beginning she was so much like her predecessor, Nidorina, that she might as well had been the exact same character. The further development of character has made her a lot more unique as time went on. As for the rest, you know the story. Spunky big sister yadda yadda yadda.

Nidorina is from Alternate Universe, and is also inspired by the Pokemon of the same name from my copy of Pokemon Silver.

December 31th (Option A) - Nidorina

I hope no one's surprised. Nidorina will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever be replaced as my all time favorite. Too many years in the running that can't be undone. The hardest part was actually choosing WHICH Nidorina, because there's two I like most. So for the benefit of Nidorina kind (and bias), I did both.

Option A: What you get is a slightly more wild animal-like Nidorina traded against the fact that she doesn't wear the face of a common Nidorina. If I were to use TvTropes' Sliding Scale of Anthropomorphism, she sits in between Funny Animal and Civilized Animal. You should know enough about her otherwise. Loves kids, food, Nidorino, don't mess with her kids, or else she'll become downright psychotic.

Nidorina is from Poke Tales.

December 30th - Bellsprout Bell

Of all entries, this is the only one that was chosen due to outside influence. Maybe because I don't really care for big musclebound Pokemon almost as a rule. Granted, "Hardcore" is up for interpretation.

I just went with what I knew, and I find Bellsprout to be rather admirable. He's an approachable all around cool guy, but is otherwise really disciplined. He's like Ryu with a social life. Despite his frail body, he can still hold his own with swiftness and cunning. Bellsprout, as a character, has gotten me interested in Bellsprout as a species. It's pretty much the Nidorina cycle all over again.

Bellsprout is from Alternate Universe, and is also inspired by the Pokemon of the same name from my friend's copy of Pokemon Gold.

December 29th - Sigilyph

I think this one called for scariest. TBH I don't really think any of them are scary except maybe Beedrill for practical reasons, but I'll compromise with "unsettling". When I first saw this thing pop up in Pokemon Y, I literally said to myself "what the hell is that thing~" in a low, uncertain tone.

If MissingNo had a physical form, it'd look like Sigilyph, perhaps crossed with Claydol and Deoxys, which were Pokemon I used to consider weird back then. And that's on top of looking like Double from Skullgirls to begin with. Needless to say, I caught one, and now I'm rather attached to it having gotten past the fact that it just shouldn't be.

Sigilyph was going to appear in a comic that's been canned, but maybe I'll still use him elsewhere. Currently, he is inspired by the Pokemon of the same name in my copy of Pokemon Y.

December 28th - Nidoran Schneider

Is it time for Saturday morning cartoons? Don't be ridiculous, they generally quit that a long time ago. No, this woman rolled out of bed at two in the afternoon on a Tuesday, now engrossed in midday airings of Steven Universe (which has now ended, by the way). A curiosity: if a Nidoran has bedhead, does that make them more lethal? Didi and her sister get along so well, especially at a time when they need each other the most. Two peas in a pod, really, which shows that a familial bond can sometimes be the strongest one of them all.

Didi is from Alternate Universe, but really gets some time in the limelight in the Dumb Big Sister, Stupid Little Sister comics.
